The real subject

Uhlans were cavalry units that kept their own name, their traditional dress and the pride of their branch even after their role changed. The command element of an uhlan regiment did not, however, spend its time exclusively in the saddle: when planning, receiving reports and working as a staff, the officers moved about on foot. It is figures of exactly this kind that the set captures, that is a command group off their horses.

What the set contains

Figures of officers in 1:72 scale. An adult figure works out at just under two and a half centimeters in that scale, so these are small parts with fine relief. The figures are supplied unpainted. The number of pieces and the breakdown of the individual poses are stated on the packaging and in the manufacturer's instructions.

Building and painting tips

Take the small parts off with a sharp blade and work over a tray with a raised rim, so that a broken-off arm or head does not roll away across the floor. Clean up the traces of production with fine abrasive paper or a file. First spray the figures with a base coat, which evens the surface out and brings out the relief. In this scale it pays to start from a lighter base and to put the shadows on with a thin glaze; painting every button separately makes no sense, as in a scene the eye takes in the silhouette and the color contrast rather than the detail. A fine brush with a small amount of paint will handle the face and hands. Protect the finished figures with a matte varnish.
