About product

Pom-Pom Gun with British Crew, a set 1:72 from Strelets

A set in 1:72 scale joining a gun and figures of its British crew from the period of the Anglo-Boer War. It is therefore neither a standalone infantry set nor a standalone model of a weapon, but a complete scenic group that can be set into a diorama as one whole. The manufacturer is the firm Strelets; the castings are of soft plastic of a uniform color and come unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The nickname pom-pom arose from the sound of the rapid, interrupted fire of an automatic gun that appeared on both sides in the Anglo-Boer War. Technically it was a weapon on the border between a machine gun and a light gun: it fired from a belt, was carried on a wheeled carriage and its value lay in the rate of fire, not in range. That is precisely why it was used to support infantry at short and medium ranges and in the field was moved with a team or by hand by the crew.

Building and painting tips

The gun is the most demanding part of the whole set, because it has small parts of the carriage and the wheels that have to be glued at right angles. Proceed from the carriage, therefore: first assemble the base and let it dry, and only then fit the weapon and the shield if it is included. Once glued, check the wheels on a flat surface, so that the assembly does not limp. Use cyanoacrylate or a glue for soft plastics. Handle the painting separately: the metal of the weapon with a dark steel tone with fine accenting of the edges, the wood of the carriage with brown and a dry brush, the crew's uniforms in the khaki tones typical of British units of the end of the nineteenth century. Lay the crew out so that every character has a clear task; the scene then looks convincing even without further accessories. At the end unify everything with matte clear and add fine dust to the wheels and the boots.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building dioramas from the Anglo-Boer War
  • collectors of 1:72 figures looking for sets with a weapon and a crew
  • modelers who want to add a compact group with a story to a scene
  • players of historical tabletop games needing a support weapon

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Both. The set is built as a weapon with a crew; the number of figures and parts is stated on the packaging.

It was an automatic quick-firing gun carried on a wheeled carriage.

The figures are trivial; the gun calls for patience while gluing the carriage and the wheels. We recommend assembling it in parts and letting the joints dry.

With cyanoacrylate or with a glue intended for soft plastics. Ordinary polystyrene cement does not bite into this material.
