A set of masking stencils in 1:72 scale from Armycast for spraying markings in the toned-down, so-called low-visibility form. The film is applied to finished paintwork, the insignia is sprayed over it and the mask is taken off. It is precisely with low-visibility markings that spraying makes the most sense: the insignia blends into the surrounding paintwork and must not be given away by the glossy edge of a carrier film, as happens with decals. The item is an accessory for an aircraft model, not a kit.
Low-visibility markings are used on contemporary combat aircraft instead of a bold colored insignia — the drawing is the same, but the execution is toned down so that at a distance it is lost in the base finish. The contrast against the surroundings tends to be minimal, so even a small error in the spraying shows a great deal on a model. The particular shade, placement and size differ by type and by individual machine; the manufacturer does not specify them, so work from a photograph or a drawing of your own subject.
Choose a shade only slightly different from the base finish — low-visibility markings work with very little contrast and too dark a color destroys the effect. Let the paintwork cure, degrease the area and press the edges of the mask down carefully. Spray with an airbrush at right angles, with thinned paint and in thin coats; it is better to try the saturation out on an offcut. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, with tweezers at a sharp angle. Choose the final varnish in the same degree of gloss as the surrounding finish, otherwise the insignia will stand out by its gloss rather than by its color.
