This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:700 captures the Japanese battleship Mutsu as she was in 1942. The full hull form means that the model has the complete hull including the underwater part and is built onto a stand or a base; it is not a waterline version cut off at the water line. The manufacturer is Aoshima, a Japanese brand with a long tradition in ship models in exactly this 1:700 scale.
Mutsu was the second unit of the Nagato class, which the Imperial Japanese Navy took into service in the early 1920s. She was a large battleship with a main battery of 410 mm guns in turrets and with the characteristic tall pagoda-style superstructure, which grew from the gradual addition of command and fire control positions. In the 1930s the ship went through an extensive modernization of her machinery, armor and superstructures, after which she took on a form close to her 1942 configuration. A year later she was lost after an internal magazine explosion.
Decide right at the start whether you will build the model on a stand with the full hull or set it into a water surface of modeling resin. The small parts of the superstructures and the guns are practical to paint while still on the sprue. Spray the hull with an airbrush in layers and mask the deck separately. A model in this scale gains considerably from added photo-etched railings and mast rigging of stretched filament. A discreet wash into the superstructures and subtle edge highlighting with a dry brush are good at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
