The kit captures the German Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank in the Ausf. H production version in the small 1:72 scale. The maker is UM, which runs a whole line of vehicles derived from this chassis. The model is supplied as a classic plastic kit; the contents of the package, the number of parts and the execution of the tracks are given in the instructions inside the box.
The Pz.Kpfw. IV was the most numerously built German medium tank of the Second World War and went through a series of changes during production. The Ausf. H version belongs among the later production batches: it carried a long-barreled 7.5 cm gun, thicker frontal armor on the hull and usually also the side plates known as Schürzen, which were to protect the sides against rounds from antitank rifles. The changes at this stage of production were aimed at simplifying and speeding up output, so details such as the return rollers, the exhausts, the final drive or the shape of the commander's cupola differ from one vehicle to another. For the modeler that means the appearance of a particular vehicle depends on the production batch and on how the individual machine was modified in service.
In 1:72 scale less is sometimes more: the parts are small, so cut them off with a sharp knife and use an abrasive carefully, so as not to wipe off the fine surface detail. Assemble the running gear on a flat surface and let it cure thoroughly. Glue the side plates on only after the hull is varnished, otherwise it is hard to get a brush underneath them. Apply a primer before painting and spray the base shade with an airbrush at lower pressure and in thin layers. Do the camouflage in a small scale with softer transitions and less contrast than in 1:35. Choose a lighter and thinner wash, and apply pigments only as a hint — in a small scale they easily overpower the shape.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
