The set falls into the line of unpainted brass etches of Eduard for 1:72 scale. Unlike the pre-painted interior sets there are no printed parts here; the whole set is painted only after assembly. In content it is an exterior matter: the servicing platforms by which the ground crew reached the engines of the flying boat. That is also what sets it apart from ordinary cockpit etches. It is not an aircraft model but an accessory to a plastic kit, or a standalone feature for a diorama with a mooring.
The Short Sunderland was a British four-engine flying boat which during the Second World War served with Coastal Command on long-range patrols over the Atlantic, on convoy escort and in anti-submarine work. The Mk.III version was distinguished by a modified shape of the hull bottom. Because the machine was not serviced at an airfield but on the water at a buoy or on a slipway, maintaining the engines high above the surface depended on folding platforms and walkways directly on the wing and the nacelles.
In this scale the platforms are made up of very fine lattice work, so the main discipline is squareness. Cut the parts out with a scalpel, never break them off, and make the folds in a bending tool so that the frame is not left twisted. Assemble the structure in stages on a flat surface and let every joint harden before you add the next element. Where real strength is needed, soldering holds better than super glue. Degrease the assembly with alcohol before painting and spray a primer, and only then apply the covering shade. A dry brush and a fine wash will bring out the structure of the lattice so that the platforms do not look like a surface made of one piece.
