A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker AML Decals. It is neither a kit nor a finished model but an accessory with which you mark a finished model of the Yakovlev Yak-3 fighter. The second part of the range is devoted to the machines of Soviet fighter aces, that is to aircraft with personal markings, inscriptions and decoration that differed markedly from the standard production machines. Finishes of that kind tend to be the main reason modelers buy separate decals.
The Yakovlev Yak-3 was a light Soviet fighter that came about by thoroughly lightening and aerodynamically cleaning up the earlier types of the Yak series. It reached the fighting in 1944 and at low and medium altitudes was among the most agile machines of the Second World War. Its structure combined a metal truss frame with wooden parts and the skin was smoothly painted. The machines of Soviet aces often carried the inscriptions of presentation aircraft, brightly colored spinner tips and victory tallies, which makes them a rewarding modeling subject.
In 1:72 scale the decals are small and easily damaged, so cut them out with a sharp scalpel and handle them with a damp brush rather than tweezers. The base must be glossy and smooth, otherwise the small inscriptions will silver. Soak the decal for only a few seconds and let it rest on a cloth. The Soviet finish was usually semi-gloss to matte, so once it is dry and any softening is done, go over the area with a matte coat. Restrained weathering of exhaust stains and scuffs at the wing root gives a model depth at a small scale.
The package holds only decals. The kit, the paints and the glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
