An accessory set in 1:72 scale for models of the Soviet Su-17 fighter-bomber and its Su-22 export versions. It holds a boarding ladder for the cockpit and chocks to go under the landing gear wheels. This is an accessory, not an airplane kit — the model itself is bought separately. The parts are cast from resin rather than injection-molded like an ordinary plastic kit, which is what the handling described below follows from.
A ladder run up to the cockpit and chocked wheels turn a model standing in a display case into a scene on the apron. These are exactly the small things that give an aircraft a sense of scale and suggest that the machine has just landed or is about to take off — without them a model looks like a museum exhibit with no context. The chocks also work well on their own as small filler for an apron scene around another model in the same scale.
Wash the castings first in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap to remove any residue of mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a sharp knife at a distance from the part and level the face with a file or with wet sanding paper; wear respiratory protection while sanding. The parts in this scale are small, so handle them with tweezers over a bounded surface. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Lay down a thin primer before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold on a smooth casting. A ladder will usually take a single technical shade picked out with a dark wash in the corners and dry-brushing on the edges; the chocks suit being dirtied with dust pigments, because they lie directly on the ground.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The airplane model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
