A Su-30 ladder, 1:72, LP Models

The LP Models resin accessory for 1:72 scale adds a boarding ladder to the tandem cabin to a model of the two-seat Su-30. There is no model of the aircraft in the package; this is purely an element of ground service for completing a finished model on the apron.

What the accessory is for

The Su-30 is a two-seat multirole aircraft derived from the two-seat trainer and combat version of the Su-27 family, made in a number of modifications for home and export customers. The cabin is set high above the ground and access to both seats cannot do without a ladder brought up, so a ladder is among the equipment most often seen in photographs of machines that are parked. On a model it works as a small thing with a large effect: it suggests scale, fills the empty space at the fuselage and gives a scene a story. It comes into its own on a display-case base and in a well worked out airfield diorama.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that the remnants of the mold release agent disappear; without that neither the paint nor the primer will hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutter, do not break them off, and protect your airways when sanding. They are glued with super glue, that is, cyanoacrylate, because ordinary cement for plastic does not act on resin. After the primer, apply the paint in thin layers, so that the fine rungs are not flooded. A dark wash will bring out the steps and the frames, and a fine dry drawing over the edges will suggest scraped metal where the crew boards.
