A resin kit for experienced modelers from Brassica - a Czech maker specializing in models of Tatra trucks in the small scales. The package holds good resin castings, a photo-etched fret, decals and clear film for the windows. The designation S3 means a three-way tipper - the body tips to three sides, which was the most widely used construction variant. Let us be frank: 1:72 is a small scale. The finished model fits on a shelf, but the level of detail is naturally more modest than in the large scales. Resin helps here - the castings carry finer surface detail than ordinary injection-molded plastic could manage at this size.
The Tatra 148 was everywhere. For anyone who knows the period, this machine was part of the everyday picture of prefab building sites, quarries and sand pits, of the army, of highways and of field tracks. The 148 from Koprivnice followed on from the 138 series and was built from the turn of the 1960s and 1970s to the beginning of the 1980s in 6x6 and 4x4 versions; over one hundred thousand were made in all and a considerable part went for export. It was powered by an air-cooled V8 diesel of roughly 11.8 liters, working with a five-speed gearbox and a two-speed auxiliary. The key to the Tatra reputation, however, is the Tatra concept: a central backbone tube instead of a conventional ladder frame and independently suspended swing half-axles. The wheels therefore follow the bumps independently of one another - hence that famous cross-country mobility and the ability to travel a broken road faster than the competition. It is a distinctive design that no one else builds in this form.
First wash the resin parts in warm soapy water to remove mold release residue - otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a blade; do not break them. They are glued with super glue (cyanoacrylate), not with cement for plastic. When sanding, protect your breathing - resin dust must not be inhaled; work wet or in a respirator. Apply a primer before painting. A tipper positively asks for weathering: dust and mud in the wheel arches, scuffs on the edges of the body, rust and leftover material on the load floor.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
