The subject is the period German shelter half of the Zeltbahn type in 1:72 scale, that is a piece of kit that appears in a scene as a cover over equipment, a sheet over a trench or a folded piece of cloth beside a figure. The sheet is supplied printed on paper and the modeler cuts the shapes needed out of it and places them into a scene himself.
Unlike a waterslide decal, paper has a thickness of its own and therefore behaves like a material, not like printing on a surface. Thanks to that, drapery, a fold or a gathered edge can be created from it, which is not possible with a decal. In 1:72 scale it is a good idea to thin the paper before forming it — by sanding the reverse gently or by light dampening — so that the resulting sheet does not come across as oversized.
Cut with a new sharp scalpel along a metal rule, ideally on a cutting mat; a blunted edge tears the paper and the margin then stands out in a scene. For forming, dampening with water with a drop of PVA glue proves itself — the paper softens, can be folded over an edge, drawn over equipment or rolled up, and once dry it holds the shape. Glue onto surfaces with thin PVA glue applied in a thin layer, so that the paper does not buckle.
Printed paper tends to be too clean once cut out and its white edge gives away that it is a cutout. So go over the edges with a darker paint or dust them with pigment. You then unify the whole part with a light filter, a muted wash into the folds and finally matte clear coat, which brings the sheen in line with the surroundings of the diorama. Work in thin layers; paper takes less moisture than plastic.
