Marder I is the collective designation for the improvised German self-propelled anti-tank guns of 1942 and 1943. They came about by setting a 75 mm anti-tank gun into a tall open superstructure on the chassis of a captured French vehicle. Alongside the commonest version on the chassis of the Lorraine artillery tractor, a smaller series of vehicles was converted in the same way on the chassis of light tanks, among them the FCM 36. The result was a machine with fairly powerful armament but with a tall silhouette and only light armor around the open fighting compartment. The vehicles served with the anti-tank battalions of infantry divisions, chiefly on the Western Front.
An open superstructure means that the inside of the fighting compartment stays in view on the finished model - finish and paint it before you close the superstructure up. The same goes for the running gear: the wheels, rollers and tracks are easier to paint before they are set on the hull. Use a thin cement on the plastic, one that runs into the seam by capillary action, and apply a primer before painting. The camouflage is best sprayed with an airbrush, and you can tune the weathering with a dark wash into the recesses and pigments for dust and mud on the suspension.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
