Relief color decals for the instrument panel of the Thunderbolt in the P-47D version in the razorback configuration, that is with the dorsal spine behind the cockpit. 1:48 scale. The set is applied as a decal and takes the place of painting the instruments by hand; it is neither a plastic nor a photo-etched part.
The Republic P-47D is the main production version of the American heavy single-engine fighter with a radial engine and a turbocharger. The early production machines kept the original fuselage shape with a dorsal spine and a framed canopy, which modeling practice calls the razorback. In this configuration the cockpit is more enclosed than under the later bubble canopy, yet the instrument panel is still easy to read when seen from the front.
A relief decal differs from a flat one in having a thickness of its own. The base therefore has to be smooth and gloss, otherwise air will be trapped under the decal and the surface will silver. Cut the decal as close as you can, release it in lukewarm water and seat it on its target surface without needless sliding. Apply the softener drop by drop along the edges and let it work by itself, leaving the decal undisturbed for at least 45 minutes; do not run a brush over the relief, or the raised details will be squashed or torn off. When it is dry, go over the surroundings with matte varnish and leave the dials themselves gloss, so that they read as glass.
