The eleventh part of the Ukrainian series from Star Decals is devoted to the M113 armored personnel carriers that traveled into the country from abroad in the years 2022 and 2023. According to the name the sheet covers the American versions M113A2 and M113A3, the German M113G3 and the Australian M113AS4.
The M113 has been built since the 1960s and has spread into dozens of armies, with each one adapting it in its own way. The A2 version was given more effective cooling and revised suspension, the A3 then a stronger powertrain and different steering controls. The German G3 is told apart by its different fit on the hull and by modifications arising from local regulations, the Australian AS4 has a lengthened hull with another road wheel and a strengthened chassis. It is precisely these differences that decide which markings belong on a particular model. Before building, therefore, compare the shape of the rear and the number of road wheels against a photograph.
The aluminum hull of the M113 has large flat areas on which every difference in gloss stands out. Even them out with varnish before applying the markings, therefore. The front and side panels tend to be scuffed in service, so once a decal has dried you can lightly sand it with very fine paper. Around grab handles and fittings it pays to cut the carrier film with a sharp point.
