The choice between worn and solid grass is not cosmetic but a matter of storytelling. An even, undisturbed sward matches situations where nobody has been taxiing across the area for any length of time: the edge of an airfield away from the taxi routes, a newly laid area, a machine on static display or a ceremonial occasion. A scene of a busy field airfield with wheels sunk into the mud, by contrast, calls for the variant with the signs of use. Decide according to the story the model is to tell.
A continuous green surface is at the same time the quietest possible background for photography. It competes with the model neither in color nor in pattern, it has no markings, numbers or lines, and so it suits a machine of any country and any period. In practice it is worth combining: solid grass forms the edge of the scene and a paved surface or worn grass from another sheet in the same scale forms the center.
