A printed scenic base 450 x 450 mm for models in 1:72 scale. It shows the airfield surface of the Korat base in Thailand in its state as of 1972. It is neither a kit nor a decal but a large-format sheet on which a finished model is stood. For a modeler building hardware from Southeast Asia of the early 1970s, it is the quickest route to a scene anchored in its period.
The definition is very specific: one station and one year. When choosing, that is both an advantage and a restriction. An advantage, because the paint scheme and markings of the model can be matched to the motif exactly; a restriction, because a model from another decade already looks out of place in the scene. If you build hardware from this region and period, the base will close the scene off more precisely than a universal motif.
A tropical setting leaves different traces on operational surfaces than a temperate one. After heavy rain, damp stays in the joints and at the edges of areas, where deposits collect and the color of the surface is permanently darker. On the model that has a direct bearing: instead of gray European dust choose warmer, brown-shifted tones on the landing gear and the underside of the fuselage, and let them run into the shadows rather than spreading them over the whole area. At the same time do not overdo the matting. A surface that stays a little damp has a lower but not a zero sheen, and this subtle difference makes a scene believable more than added pigment does.
