This detailing set from the manufacturer Wolfpack replaces the plastic exhaust nozzle on a model of the F-104 Starfighter in 1:48 scale and is worked up according to the late version of the nozzle. The resin casting holds a thin trailing edge and the division of the petals, which on injection-molded plastic can only be suggested, and with it the filling of the seam inside the duct falls away. The set is intended for the Kinetic kit.
The designation of the late version matters, because on the Starfighter the treatment of the exhaust nozzle differed during service. This is not a model of an aircraft, but an accessory for a kit bought separately.
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was a single-seat single-engine supersonic aircraft with a very thin wing of small area and a slender fuselage. It was powered by a General Electric J79 engine with an afterburner. The aircraft served in many countries and in various versions, which differed in equipment and in details of the airframe. Because of the slender fuselage, the nozzle forms the visual closure of the whole aircraft and on a model it is almost impossible to overlook.
Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release agent is removed. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw or a cutting disc, and do not break it. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate), as a cement for plastic models will not join resin. Sand wet and with respiratory protection. Apply a primer before painting. It is a good idea to paint and weather the nozzle before gluing it to the fuselage, as once it is fitted you will reach into it only with difficulty. The metallic shades are completed by a thin wash and a slight darkening of the trailing edge.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The set is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
