A pre-cut self-adhesive masking set of kabuki tape for a model of the carrier-based Phantom in 1:72 scale. The ADVANCED level denotes the extent of the set: this manufacturer offers the BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT variants alongside one another, and they differ in how many areas of the model the set covers. Kabuki tape is a thin paper carrier: it adapts well to the curve of the canopy, seals on an edge and after removal leaves neither adhesive nor matte traces on the clear parts. It is not a model of an airplane or a kit, but an accessory used during painting.
The F-4J was the version of the McDonnell Douglas Phantom II fighter aircraft operated by the US Navy and the Marine Corps. It was a two-seat twin-engine supersonic machine with markedly divided glazing of its two-seat cockpit. Compared with the land-based variants, the carrier-based versions had different details of the airframe and equipment for operation from aircraft carriers, so it pays to reach for a mask intended for this very version.
Wash the glazing in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry freely. Lift the mask off with tweezers, seat it dry according to the engraved frame and only then press it down with a soft tool from the center toward the edges. With more extensive sets it is practical to stick all the pieces on first and only then start spraying, as re-masking step by step raises the risk of blurring the edge. Apply the paint in thin coats; a first thin coat in the shade of the frame will seal the edge and mask any seepage. Remove the mask shortly after it has dried, at a sharp angle.
