An accessory set from the Upgrade Solution range intended for a model of the T-34/85 medium tank in the Model 1944 production version from Factory No. 174 in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the tank: the model is obtained separately and the set serves to replace or add the details that injection-molded plastic cannot render finely enough.
What an upgrade set is good for
On a tank model the most conspicuous weak point is the thin sheet metal elements: covers, mesh screens, fenders, brackets and grab handles. In plastic they have to have a measurable thickness, so seen from the side they look heavy. Photo-etched metal is a few tenths of a millimeter thick and the difference shows at once, especially on bent or damaged sheet, which can be shaped faithfully from an etched fret. Check the particular list of parts on the box.
The T-34/85 is a later development version of the Soviet T-34 medium tank, recognizable by its larger three-man turret with an 85 mm gun. The vehicles were built in several factories at the same time and the individual plants differed in detail: in the type of road wheels, the shape of the turret castings, the position of the brackets and the external equipment. The designation Model 1944 and the note about the production plant are therefore not a formality, as they determine which details a particular machine should have.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and bend them in a photo-etch bending tool or over the edge of a razor blade. They are bonded with super glue applied with a pin in a minimal amount, and any excess should be wiped off at once. Degrease the etched parts before painting and apply a thin coat of metal primer, otherwise the paint will chip during handling. Plan ahead what has to be fitted before you close up the hull. Apply the weathering last, as the thin edges of photo-etched parts respond well to a dry brush and a fine wash.
