A bust of a fantasy character cast in resin in 1:10 scale. It is not a kit in the usual sense: the parts are merely cleaned up and put together, and all the work then lies in the painting. A character bust of this kind lives off the expression of the face: the wrinkles, the shadows under the eyes and the transitions on the forehead. Resin carries such modeling crisply and without loss, so it pays to work with heavily thinned paint and in many coats.
First a wash in lukewarm soapy water, so that any mold release residue disappears from the surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife and level the area left behind with fine abrasive paper; resin is better sanded wet and with respiratory protection. Look for the parting lines under side lighting, as they are easy to miss in shadow. Fill the seam where the parts meet with modeling filler and sand it over, so that no trace of it is left on the finished bust. If the casting is split, join the parts with cyanoacrylate glue after a dry test fit.
After the primer, start with the skin in a mid tone and only then build the shadows and the highlights. On an older face the work with the wrinkles is the key: a thin dark tone into the furrow, a highlight on the ridge beside it, and never both at full strength, as excessive contrast turns a wrinkle into a groove in a mask. Paint the eyes in the order of white, iris, surrounding line and the shadow of the upper lid. The beard and the hair look best when the base tone is drawn out with a dry brush over the tops of the strands. Bring out textiles with a wash into the folds, and keep the metal and leather accessories muted, so that they do not pull attention away from the face. Leave mounting it on the base until last.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, primer and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
