About product

Instrument panel for the Spitfire Mk.IX early and Mk.VII/VIII in 1:24 scale

This is not a kit and not a photo-etched set to be painted. It is a finished, already pre-printed instrument panel in relief, with which you simply replace the plastic part from the kit in the cockpit. The dial faces, the scales and the lettering are printed straight in color, so the most tiresome part of building an interior falls away: drawing the individual dials in by hand with a fine brush.

Panel, decal or photo-etch

A decal can do color, but it has no depth and on shaped plastic it has to be fought with. A photo-etched set has depth, but it needs to be put together and painted. The finished panel from Yahu takes the road in between: you get a single part, it is fitted and that is that. In 1:24 scale the cockpit is large and much of it shows, so the difference against the plastic part is apparent at once.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX arose from the airframe of the Mk.V with the addition of a Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 series engine with a two-stage supercharger, and became one of the most successful versions of the type. The Mk.VII and Mk.VIII versions were related machines with the same generation of engine, intended mainly for high-altitude work, the Mk.VII additionally with a pressurized cabin. The arrangement of the instruments in the early Mk.IX cockpit corresponded to exactly these versions, which is why the manufacturer covers them with one and the same panel.

Fitting it into the cockpit

Cut the plastic panel out of the kit carefully, or sand it down flat, so that the new panel drops into the same place and does not sit higher. Try it dry until it seats exactly. It is glued with a small amount of cyanoacrylate applied round the edge with the tip of a toothpick; watch out for the fumes, which can fog the glass of the instruments and the canopy as well. Dose the cyanoacrylate sparingly and let the cockpit air out thoroughly before it is closed.

Who the instrument panel is for

  • Builders of large Spitfire models in 1:24 scale
  • Modelers who do not want to paint dials by hand
  • Those who build with the canopy open and the interior will show
  • Beginners: fitting it is simpler than putting a photo-etched set together

FAQ

No. It is pre-printed and is fitted straight into the cockpit; painting the individual instruments falls away.

A small amount of cyanoacrylate round the edge. Dose it sparingly; the fumes can fog glazed surfaces.

It is not. It is a one-piece accessory for the cockpit of a model you already have.

According to the manufacturer, for the early form of the Mk.IX and for the Mk.VII and Mk.VIII versions with the same generation of cockpit.
