A character bust cast in resin in 1:10 scale. Assembly is a matter of moments: clean the casting up, put it together and prepare the surface for paint. The rest is painting, and with a striking fantasy face that is the work that decides the whole impression. Resin carries even the small modeling of skin and wrinkles without loss, so thin glazes and shadows have something to hold on to.
Wash the casting in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry thoroughly; mold release agent that has not been washed off is the most frequent reason why paint later rubs away. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, level the area left behind with fine abrasive paper and sand wet with respiratory protection. Parting lines show up best under side lighting. Fill the seam between the parts put together with modeling filler and smooth it over, and glue the joints with cyanoacrylate glue after a dry test fit.
After a thin primer, lay a mid tone of skin and only then build the volume. On a character face it pays to raise the contrast compared with human skin: deeper shadows into the wrinkles and under the nose, stronger highlights on the forehead, the cheekbones and the chin. Reddening at the tip of the nose and on the ears adds credibility, but only as a translucent glaze. Paint the eyes before their surroundings and check the symmetry of one against the other rather than one at a time. The hair and the beard look best once gone over with a dry brush, and a wash into the folds brings out the textiles and the leather parts. Deal with the metal and the jewelry at the end and only sparingly, so that they do not overpower the face. Mount the finished bust on the base.
