About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 101st Airborne Division Normandy 1944

A collector's bust in 1:10 scale cast in resin. The casting is aligned and glued in several parts, so the building itself takes a fraction of the time; all the rest of the work is done by the painting. In a large scale every transition is legible, which is exactly what busts are bought for.

Preparing the casting

First a wash in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp knife or a fine saw, run a scalpel along the mold parting lines and finish them with wet sandpaper, protecting your airways. Fill and sand the seams after gluing, typically where the helmet sits or between the head and the torso. The parts are bonded with cyanoacrylate super glue.

Painting the face, the helmet and the gear

Resin paints badly without a primer, and a thin coat also reveals sanding scratches. Build the face in thinned layers from a mid flesh tone toward lighting on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones and toward darker transitions in the eye sockets and under the jaw. On a combat subject a slightly dusty, weather-beaten skin with a hint of stubble suits well, and the stubble is done with a very thinned gray-blue glaze over the finished skin. Paint the eyes last with the thinnest brush.

The steel helmet is the largest continuous area on the bust and therefore decides the overall impression. A matte olive base needs fine lighting on the crown and darkening under the rim, so that the area does not collapse into a uniform patch. If the casting carries netting or bands, they are painted only once the shell is finished, otherwise they will disappear. Treat the straps, the webbing and the cloth parts with a darker base and lighter edges; the small metal buckles are finished by a wash into the hollows and polished edges. At the end comes the weathering, that is, fine dust in the folds and on the lower edges, and fitting to a base.

Who the bust is for

  • Collectors of portrait busts from the period of the Second World War.
  • Figure painters practicing weather-beaten skin and stubble.
  • Modelers who want to work with the large area of a steel helmet.
  • More experienced builders used to working with resin.

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is supplied as a resin casting to assemble and paint.

Only once the skin is finished, with a very thinned gray-blue glaze over the chin and the jaw. Drawing the individual hairs would look coarse in a large scale.

Cyanoacrylate super glue. Cement for plastic does not soften resin.

With busts in this scale the division is usually at the head, the torso and the headgear. Check the exact number of parts on the box.
