A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. It is a portrait of a particular named person, a German officer on the Western Front in 1944. What follows keeps to the sculptural and painting side: the likeness of the face, the cut of the uniform and the surfaces that are painted. The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
A portrait of a named person makes different demands from a general figure. What decides is the likeness: the proportions of the face, the shape of the nose and the chin, the set of the ears and the hairline. These are the areas the painting must not break, because shadows that are too strong or over-lit edges will shift the likeness at once. The uniform, by contrast, is calm, with smooth areas of broadcloth and sharply distinguished elements of gear.
Wash the casting free of mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw, align the parts dry and fill and sand the seams. On a portrait the preparation of the surface matters more than elsewhere, because every unevenness on the face shows after spraying. Apply the primer thinly and in several coats.
Painting: build the skin from thin coats and glazes, keep the transitions soft and the contrast rather low, which on a portrait looks natural. Paint the eyes first and give them time, because they set the whole expression. Deal with the hair using a glaze and a dry brush in the direction of the strands. Leave the broadcloth of the uniform matte, set the leather elements and the buckles apart by sheen and underlay the metal surfaces with a dark base. Use the minimum of weathering, as a clean surface looks better on an officer's portrait than a dusty one. Finally pin the bust to a base and check the likeness from a distance, not only from close up.
