About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 Red Devils, Arnhem 17 September 1944

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. The casting is supplied unpainted and unassembled. The building is a matter of a few parts, whereas with British paratrooper subjects the painting is among the more demanding things figure modeling has to offer.

The sculpting and the painting task

A British paratrooper smock is painted with a hand-applied camouflage pattern, and that is the main reason modelers buy this type of bust. The pattern cannot be painted as a flat design: every blotch has to bend along the fold, be larger and lighter on a stretched surface and smaller and darker in the depth of a fold. Only then does the cloth look as if it really undulates under the pattern. The face is shaded by the helmet, so the upper part belongs in a lower tonal value than the chin, but not so much that the eyes disappear. The straps and the leather webbing work as calm areas that let the pattern stand out, and the metal buckles then as contrasting accents.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, fill the parting seams and sand them with fine paper, wet and with your airways protected. Make the joints with super glue. Apply a thin primer in misting passes. Build the skin in many thinned layers and do the eyes right at the start. Begin the smock with the base tone of the underlying cloth and let it dry completely; only then apply the blotches of the pattern, always from darker to lighter and always with regard to the shape of the fold. Do not push the contrast of the pattern to the maximum, because too sharp a pattern will overpower the face. Once it is finished, unify the whole pattern with a very thinned filter so that the blotches settle into one fabric. Set the webbing and the straps apart with their own tone and sheen. Darken the metal parts with weathering. Pin the bust to a base only once the painting has been sealed with varnish.

  • Collectors of portrait busts in 1:10 scale
  • Advanced modelers looking for a more demanding figure project

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Draw the blotches only onto a dried base tone and bend them along the folds. On a stretched surface they should be larger and lighter, in the depth of a fold smaller and darker. At the end unify the pattern with a thinned filter.

It can, if it has too high a contrast. Keep the blotches in a more subdued range than the skin, so that the portrait stays dominant.

A modeling saw or a cutting disc for the casting blocks, fine sandpaper, modeling putty and super glue. Do the sanding wet and protect your airways.
