About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 US 2nd Ranger Battalion, Normandy 1944

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. The casting is supplied unpainted and with a small number of parts. What decides the difference between an average and an outstanding result here is not the building but the ability to paint the face and to tell the materials of the gear apart.

The sculpting and the painting task

The key element of the composition is the helmet, which shades the face. The painter has to respect that: the upper part of the face belongs in shadow, the lower part in light, or the bust will lose its depth. At the same time the shadow must not be so dark that the eyes disappear. The jacket, the straps and the pouches all move within a narrow range of olive and khaki shades that have to be shifted away from one another, or the whole lower part will merge into a single area. It helps to give each material a slightly different tone and a different degree of sheen: the cotton jacket matte, the straps a little lighter and coarser, the leather slightly glossy. The metal clasps and buckles are painted at the end.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc, fill the seams and sand them with fine paper while protecting your airways. Join the parts with super glue. Apply a thin primer, and with this subject a mid gray is proven, as it helps to keep the olive shades subdued. Build the skin in thinned layers from the mid value of the tone, bearing in mind that the upper part of the face will be darker. Paint the eyes right at the start, while you have access to them. Unify the cloth with a base tone and only then add shadows into the folds and highlights onto the edges. Set the straps and the webbing apart not only by shade but with their own layer of highlighting. Darken the metal parts and leave the reflection only on the top of the edges. Keep the weathering restrained, with dust and mud only in the lower areas. Fit the base at the end, once the painting has been sealed with varnish.

FAQ

Keep the upper part of the face in a darker tonal value than the chin and the jaw, but build the shadow with a glaze rather than with a covering dark paint. The eyes have to stay legible.

Shift the base tone of each material in a different direction and give them a different degree of sheen. The cotton stays matte, while the webbing can be a shade lighter and coarser.

Yes, the parting seams from the mold stay visible once painted. Fill them with modeling putty and sand them away with fine sandpaper.
