They are neither bases nor finished terrain but an aid for work with putty: the mold is fitted around a base, delimits its perimeter and holds the material inside the outline. The number of pieces and the oval shape are given directly in the name of the set, so you know what you will find in the package.
A diorama arises in layers from the bottom up and right at the bottom is the groundwork. It is exactly that which causes the most trouble, because putty tends to escape over the edge of a base and foul its sides, which then stay unsightly. A surround settles this problem mechanically: the perimeter is firmly fixed, the putty has nowhere to spread and the modeler can concentrate on shaping the area inside. Only once the base is finished and firm does the higher level of the scene follow, that is the surface texture, the growth and finally the small accents.
