Young Miniatures 1:10 U.S. Tank Crew Europe WWII is a resin portrait bust of a US tanker. The main work lies in painting the face, the leather and the tank helmet.
Responsibility details are not available.
A collector's portrait bust in 1:10 scale cast in resin. The building is a matter of minutes: the parts of the casting are aligned, glued and filled. Everything else is painting, and that is where the value of a bust of this format lies, because the 1:10 scale carries detail that would disappear on a small figure.
Preparing the casting
Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent disappears from the surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp knife or a saw, run a scalpel along the mold parting lines and finish them with wet sandpaper, protecting your airways. Fill and sand the seams after gluing. The parts are bonded with cyanoacrylate super glue; cement for plastic has no effect on resin.
Apply a thin coat of primer, as resin will not take the paint evenly without it. Build the face in thinned layers from a mid flesh tone toward lighting on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones and toward darker transitions in the eye sockets and under the jaw. A combat subject will take a slightly dusty skin and a hint of stubble, which is done with a very thinned gray-blue glaze. Paint the eyes at the end with the thinnest brush and preferably in two passes.
Tank crews wore leather and cloth jackets, which is a rewarding combination on a bust. Leather needs a deeper base, soft lighting on the stretched areas and fine polishing on the edges of the collar and the cuffs; a matte surface would look like cloth and an exaggerated sheen like plastic, so the measure is what decides. Leave the cloth parts matte by contrast and shade them only in the folds. A tank helmet with cutouts for the headphones is a different material from a steel combat helmet, so paint it subdued and without a metallic sheen. Zippers, buckles and small metal elements are finished by a wash into the hollows and fine polishing of the edges. At the end a weak weathering pass, a hint of dust and grease in the folds, and fitting to a base.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
