About product

A steam torpedo cutter 34 feet long, 1:100 scale

The kit captures a small steam vessel with torpedo armament. Thanks to the 1:100 scale, such a small subject makes a model that fits in the palm of a hand and yet still leaves room for an honest rendering of the deck, the funnel and the armament. It will suitably complete a display case with larger surface ships of the same scale.

A small steamer with a big weapon

Steam cutters of this kind belonged to the equipment of the large warships of the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. They served for transport between ship and shore, for patrol duty in harbors and on roadsteads, and in their armed form also for a torpedo attack at short range. They were in fact a transitional vessel between an ordinary ship's boat and the independent torpedo boat that was only then being born out of these experiments. A length of around thirty-four feet means that the crew was made up of just a few men and the radius of action remained limited to the surroundings of the mother ship or the base.

What to watch out for during the build

With an object this small, cleanness decides. First try the mating surfaces of the hull and the deck dry and even any inaccuracies out by sanding while the parts are still free. Fit the thin vertical features, that is, the funnel and the mast, only after the hull is sprayed. The painting comes out best from a darker undercoat with lighter accentuation of the edges, and a fine dark deposit running into the seams will draw a wooden deck out. The model looks good on a simple stand or on a board with a suggested water surface.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of ships in 1:100 scale
  • those interested in the navy of the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
  • modelers who like building small vessels with great detail
  • creators of harbor tableaux and accessories for larger ships

The set is sold unassembled and in the base color of the material, so glue and paints have to be acquired separately.

FAQ

The subject measured around thirty-four feet, so in 1:100 scale the model comes out the size of a palm.

For transport between ship and shore, for patrolling in harbors and, in their armed form, for a torpedo attack at close range.

The number of parts is low, but the small features call for patience and fine tools.
