1:100 BT-5

BT-5 1:100 (Zvezda)

A simple snap-fit plastic kit of the Soviet BT-5 fast tank in the small scale of 1:100 from Zvezda. The model comes from the Art of Tactic game range and is designed as snap-fit, that is with parts that fit together without any need for glue. The small number of parts makes it a quick and undemanding build.

The real subject

The BT-5 was a Soviet fast tank of the 1930s with convertible wheel-and-track running gear, based on the Christie design. It stood out for its high speed and good mobility and carried a 45 mm gun in the turret. It was committed in the Spanish Civil War, at Khalkhin Gol and in the opening phase of the Second World War, where more modern types gradually replaced it.

Building and painting tips

Thanks to the snap-fit design the model can be built even without glue, but for strength we recommend running a little thin cement for plastic into the joints. In the small scale of 1:100 what stands out above all is clean edges and restrained painting: a base Soviet green, a fine wash into the recesses and discreet dry-brushing to bring out the details. Use pigments sparingly, so that a small model does not turn coarse.
