A plastic kit of the road racing motorcycle Honda NSR 500 in the specification of the 1984 season in 1:12 scale from Tamiya. The assembled model measures 166 mm long and 52 mm wide. The kit captures the two-stroke V4 engine, the aluminum frame, the tank routed beneath the engine and the expansion chambers above it. The box holds vinyl tubing for the fuel lines and the control cables, a metal coil spring for the rear suspension, decals, masking stickers and a racing stand for display. The fairing, the chamber cover and the seat are attached with fine screws, so they can be removed to reveal the engine and the frame.
The 500s were the top class of road racing, the direct predecessor of today's MotoGP. Two-strokes with brutal power and a reputation for being extremely hard to handle. Honda built the NSR 500 for 1984 after taking the title with the three-cylinder NS500 and bet on a more powerful four. The 1984 version is legendary for its inverted layout: the fuel tank was placed low, beneath the engine and the exhaust expansion chambers on the contrary above it. The aim was to lower the center of gravity as far as possible. The experiment did not work out: too low a center of gravity worsened the weight transfer under braking and acceleration, the chambers above the engine cracked and radiated heat at the rider, and for the following season Honda went back to the conventional arrangement. It is exactly this design dead end that makes the model a one-off in a collection.
This is a gloss model: the surface of the fairing has to be perfectly smooth, because gloss will mercilessly show every scratch, every mold parting line and every unfilled joint. Work through filler, sanding with fine grits, a filler primer and only then the gloss color; ideally apply it with an airbrush in thin coats. The engine and the frame come to life with metal shades and a dark wash in the recesses. The sponsor decals on the curved surfaces of the fairing will call for a decal softener, otherwise they will lift on the edges and the pressings. Glue the vinyl tubing and the cables with cyanoacrylate glue and the plastic with ordinary liquid cement for plastic.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
