An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-stroke quarter-liter Yamaha TZR250 in the shape of the first production form. The 1:12 scale is the usual one for motorcycles and allows the frame, the engine and the fairing to be worked out with a great deal of detail. The model comes from the Japanese maker Hasegawa, which has this range covered in several boxings distinguished by form and color finish. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the extent of the decal sheet are stated on the box.
The TZR250 appeared in the mid-1980s as a road replica of a racing machine for the most popular Japanese displacement class. It was powered by a liquid-cooled two-stroke twin of just under 250 cubic centimeters, completed with a system of variable exhaust port timing that improved the torque curve at lower revs. The engine was mounted in an aluminum frame with a large section along the tank, that is in a structure derived directly from racing machines. It was precisely the combination of a light frame, a sharp two-stroke engine and a full fairing that made these quarter-liter machines the object of great interest and of rivalry between brands in Japan. The first form is the most sought-after among collectors today.
On a motorcycle you work from the frame and the engine, and only then fit the fairing, so think the order of painting out in advance. Do the frame in a shade matching the real subject and add a fine gloss; the engine block takes a combination of matte aluminum paint with a dark wash that brings out the fins. Paint the fairing separately away from the model, as thin coats and a final gloss varnish are essential on motorcycles. The expansion chamber of a two-stroke engine tends to be a prominent feature, and restrained heat staining gives it credibility. The brake lines and cables can be added with thin wire or line, which brings a model markedly to life.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
