About product

Hawker Sea Hawk FGA.50 and Mk.101 in 1:144 scale from Miniwing

The kit captures the British Hawker Sea Hawk carrier-based jet aircraft in its export versions. The FGA.50 designation belongs to machines of Dutch naval aviation, while the Mk.100 and Mk.101 series belong to machines of the Marineflieger. In 1:144 scale it is a small model, with which the cleanliness of the surface and precisely applied decals are what decide.

The real subject

The Sea Hawk came out of the Hawker P.1040 project and entered service with the Fleet Air Arm in the first half of the 1950s. It is a single-seat carrier-based aircraft with a straight folding wing and with an unusual exhaust arrangement: the gas flow is split into two jetpipes on the sides of the rear fuselage, which freed space for fuel in the fuselage. The powerplant is a Rolls-Royce Nene jet engine with a centrifugal compressor. Besides the Royal Navy the aircraft also served with foreign operators. Dutch naval aviation operated the FGA.50 version, the Marineflieger received machines of the Mk.100 and Mk.101 series, and the Mk.101 version was fitted with radar.

Building and painting tips

The surface of the fuselage, where the halves meet and where the bifurcated exhaust runs, will take the most work. Sand the joints smooth and restore the engraving with a fine needle. Paint the insides of the wing-root air intakes before you close the fuselage up. Apply the paint well thinned in thin coats, so it does not clog the detail at a scale this small. Always lay a gloss varnish down before the decals, move the decals with a damp brush and draw them down with a decal softener, so they follow the shape. Naval machines tend to be boldly marked, so it is the decals that decide the result most. Glue the landing gear and the small antennas on only at the end.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of carrier-based jet aircraft of the 1950s
  • For anyone interested in the foreign operators of British hardware
  • For modelers who build in 1:144 scale and enjoy fine work
  • For a display case where variants of one type are compared side by side

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The FGA.50 is the export version for Dutch naval aviation, while the Mk.100 and Mk.101 series went to the Marineflieger. Both are therefore foreign operators of the British type.

Its unusual exhaust arrangement, which is split into two jetpipes on the sides of the rear fuselage. Thanks to that, space for fuel was left in the fuselage.

Proceed step by step, cut the parts off with a sharp cutter and sand only as much as is necessary. Most of the time goes on the painting and the decals, not on the assembly itself.

Check the number of parts and the material on the packaging of the kit.
