About product

British Small Box Girder Bridge in 1:35 scale from AFV Club

This is an accessory, not a model of a combat vehicle. The Small Box Girder is a British engineer bridge unit from the period of the Second World War, which an engineer tank carried on a structure at the front and lowered across an obstacle so that other equipment could cross over it. The set in 1:35 scale makes it possible to build the bridge as an object of a scene in its own right, or to use it as a load or an accessory with a model of an engineer vehicle.

The real subject

Portable bridge units belonged to the engineer equipment that made it possible to cross an anti-tank ditch, a low wall or a steep bank quickly, without waiting for a permanent crossing to be built. The structure was designed as a welded girder frame, so a vehicle could carry it and lower it on the move. That is exactly why the bridge is a rewarding subject for a diorama: on its own it tells what is happening in the scene.

Building and painting tips

Glue the girder structure on a flat surface and keep checking whether the frame has picked up a twist; on long lattice parts that happens easily and it shows on a finished model. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts; on injection-molded plastic a thin cement that runs into the joint by capillary action works well, as any excess would remain as a mark on visible edges. Once dry, sand the mold seams down and apply a primer, which reveals irregularities sooner than paint. We recommend painting with an airbrush in two tones, so that the frame does not look flat. Credibility comes from a dark wash in the joints, fine scuffs on the edges and dust or mud in the places where the bridge touches the terrain.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of dioramas with engineer and transport subjects in 1:35
  • Modelers looking for a striking object for a scene instead of another vehicle
  • Anyone interested in British equipment of the Second World War
  • More advanced builders, as the structure calls for precise gluing

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The set is an accessory and contains the bridge structure. The vehicle is a separate model.

Yes. As an object of a scene it works even without a vehicle, for example across a ditch, a wall or a watercourse.

Glue it on a flat board, weight or clamp the parts and let the glue cure thoroughly before you handle the structure.

Check the target kit on the box of the set.
