Dual Exo 11B – Rebel Green: an AK interactive acrylic paint

This is an acrylic modeling paint from the brand AK interactive. It has a satin, that is semi-gloss, finish and carries the name of the shade in its own product name: Rebel Green. According to the name it belongs to the green group; judge the exact tone against the manufacturer's color chart or against a painted test sample.

The paint falls into the numbered Dual Exo range under number 11, variant B. A pair of shades belongs to each number, so alongside this bottle the variant 11A is available separately and there is also a twin set that brings both colors together in one package. Here it is a single bottle, variant B.

What a satin, semi-gloss finish means

Satin lies between matte and gloss. The finish has a soft, subdued sheen, so it does not look as dry as a pure matte paint, nor as toy-like as a high gloss, and shapes read well on a model. A semi-gloss surface is also more rewarding when applying decals than a coarse matte, on which air is easily trapped under a decal. You can unify the final degree of sheen at the end with a clear coat.

Working with the paint in practice

• Always stir the bottle thoroughly, ideally with a mixing ball, so that the pigment is evenly dispersed.
• The paint can be applied with a brush and with an airbrush; follow the manufacturer's information for thinning and the recommended thinner.
• Build the shade up in thin coats, because one heavy coat clogs the surface detail.
• Prepare the surface with a primer, especially on resin and metal parts, where acrylic needs adhesion.
• A test spray on a scrap part will save you surprises on the model itself.

Who the paint is for

The paint suits modelers who work with acrylic and want the degree of sheen under control from the base coat onward. It comes into its own on figures, science fiction and fantasy subjects, scene accessories and ordinary scale models, where a pure matte or a full gloss would not fit. If you are building a series and want to keep a consistent look, it is worth knowing that a second shade, variant 11A, also belongs to number 11 in the range.
