About product

Arado E.377 in 1:144 scale from Brengun

This kit from the Czech manufacturer Brengun covers the German Arado E.377 project, that is the unmanned lower part of a two-aircraft composite. The 1:144 scale is practical for a subject like this: the model stays small, it can be built in a reasonable time and it is easy to display in a case next to other late-war projects. The kit comes from a range in which Brengun builds on castings supplemented by photo-etched parts; the exact make-up of the package is not stated in the name.

The real subject

The Arado E.377 was created in the last year of the Second World War as the lower, unmanned part of the Mistel composite. It was a simple airframe with no cockpit, carrying a piloted aircraft on top of it. The basic E.377 version had no powerplant of its own; a follow-up variant was to have a pair of BMW 003 turbojets in nacelles under the wing. The project stayed at the development stage and never reached series service, but thanks to its unusual silhouette it is among the favorite subjects of modelers who collect late-war projects.

Building and painting tips

Small models in 1:144 will not take thick layers of paint, so spray thinly and preferably in two passes. Wash the resin parts before building in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand the surfaces with respiratory protection; cyanoacrylate is the best glue for them. Bend the photo-etched parts over a sharp edge or in a bender and glue them with cyanoacrylate as well. Apply the decals to a glossy base and use a softener, as on a small surface every visible decal edge shows badly. The weathering should stay very restrained, or a model in this scale looks dirty rather than used.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of projects and prototypes from the end of the Second World War
  • For modelers who collect aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • For more experienced builders who do not mind working with small parts
  • For owners of a Mistel model who want both parts separately as well

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The basic version had no powerplant of its own and relied on the engines of the upper aircraft of the composite. A follow-up variant did allow for its own pair of turbojets under the wing.

Probably not. The 1:144 scale and the expected resin and photo-etched parts call for a steady hand, a sharp tool and cyanoacrylate glue.

The manufacturer also makes a set covering the whole composite. This kit is the lower part on its own.
