Resin wheels with weighted tires for the B-17 Flying Fortress in 1:144 from the Armory brand, for the early B to F versions.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not an airplane kit but a small resin add-on set of wheels. It replaces the wheels supplied in the base kit and brings two differences that show even in the small 1:144 scale: a sharper tread pattern and a tire modeled as weighted, that is with a flattened contact patch. The model then stands naturally, as if the weight of the aircraft really rested on the gear. The set is made for the early B, C, D, E and F versions, whose wheels differ from those of later machines.
The Flying Fortress was among the heaviest four-engined bombers of its day, and the weight of a loaded machine passed in full onto the main gear wheels. That is exactly why the tire of a standing aircraft looks different from one in the air: the contact patch flattens and the sidewall bulges slightly. The early B to F versions differed from later machines in a number of details including the pattern of the wheels, so it pays to reach for the set that matches the particular version.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap so that no mold release agent stays on them. Cut them off the casting blocks with a sharp knife or a cutting disc and then check the contact patch against a flat surface, so that the wheel stands correctly. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, as plastic cement does not hold resin. Spray primer before painting. Paint the hub and the tire separately: keep the tire in a dark gray tone, because pure black looks unnatural in a small scale. Add fine dust to the contact patch and to the bottom of the hub at the end, which optically settles the wheel into the ground.
The set is an add-on, not an airplane model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
