About product

DH Vampire FB.9 in 1:144 scale

A kit of the British de Havilland Vampire jet fighter-bomber in the FB.9 version from the Czech brand Mark I Models. The Vampire is one of those types that are pleasant to build in a small scale: the short fuselage nacelle, the pair of tail booms and the straight wing make up a shape that is clean as a whole and catches the eye in a display case at once. The set is intended to be glued and painted.

The real subject

The Vampire was one of the first British jet aircraft taken into service. It was powered by a single turbojet with a centrifugal compressor housed in a short central nacelle; because of that the tail surfaces had to be carried on a pair of booms. The forward fuselage used a mixed structure with wood, which followed on from the manufacturer's wartime experience. The FB.9 version was a fighter-bomber derived from the earlier FB.5 and was adapted for service in hot regions: the main distinguishing change was the addition of cockpit cooling. The type was exported widely and in a number of countries it served long after more modern aircraft had been introduced.

Building and painting tips

The key thing is the symmetrical seating of both tail booms: stand the model on a flat board and let the glue grab before you move it. The air intakes on the sides of the nacelle are best blackened in depth, otherwise they show through. If you are building the model in natural metal or with a gloss finish, reckon with the base having to be perfectly smooth; any seam that is not sanded out shows under the gloss. With small aircraft it is better to divide the decals into smaller pieces, as they settle more easily around rounded shapes.

Who the model is for

  • Those interested in the first generation of jet aircraft
  • Collectors of 1:144 scale with a postwar aviation theme
  • Modelers who like unconventional airframe shapes
  • Builders looking for a project for one or two evenings

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was a fighter-bomber version derived from the FB.5, adapted for operation in a hot climate. The main change was cockpit cooling.

The engine was housed in a short central nacelle and the exhaust nozzle opened right behind it. The tail surfaces therefore had to be carried on booms.

In shape the model is simple, but the symmetrical seating of the booms calls for care. It suits a second or third kit.

No. The kit contains the plastic parts and the instructions; glue, paints and any accessories are bought separately.
