Reconnaissance pods made it possible for fighters to do work for which special versions used to be built. A pod is hung on a pylon, carries imaging equipment inside and is taken off again after landing, so an ordinary machine becomes a reconnaissance aircraft for one flight. The F-16 is among the types on which this way of working spread, and a reconnaissance pod hung under the aircraft is a common sight on it.
