What the pod is for

A reconnaissance pod turns an ordinary fighter into a reconnaissance aircraft for one flight. It is hung under the fuselage, carries imaging equipment with optics aimed sideways and downward inside, and is taken off again after landing. For an air force it saves procuring a special version of the aircraft, and for a modeler it gives the chance to build a machine in a form that does not come out of the box. The F-16 is among the types on which such a pod is a common sight.

What the set offers

The box brings a pod for a model of the F-16 in 1:144 scale. The addition Stowed in the designation sets this rendition apart from another form of the same pod; what exactly differs is described by the manufacturer's instructions. In 1:144 scale it is a part a few millimeters long, but on a model where there is otherwise not much to add it is noticed at once.

Building and painting tips

• The part is not polystyrene and an ordinary modeling cement will not join it; reach for super glue or epoxy.
• Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the rest level with the mating surface.
• Wash it in lukewarm soapy water before painting and let it dry, or the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
• Paint the pod separately and seat it on the model at the very end, as spraying under a hung part is awkward.
• Check the placing on the right pylon and any work on the mating surface in the manufacturer's instructions and against your own kit.
