This box from the brand Sova Model aims at the later forms of the Grumman Albatross rescue amphibian, that is at the versions designated HU-16 B and HU-16 D. It is an injection-molded kit in 1:144 scale with plastic parts and a decal sheet. Against the first of the versions in the line, the later machines differed in changes to the airframe and the equipment, which came about gradually during the type's long operating career.
Grumman designed the Albatross as a rugged machine able to settle onto a wave, pull a castaway out and take off again. The design with its deep boat hull, auxiliary floats under the wing and a pair of piston engines proved so viable that it saw commitment in Korea, in Vietnam and on routine patrols over the Atlantic. The letter versions differed in span, in the tailplane and in the installation of instruments, and the later examples also passed to foreign operators and to civil owners.
Start with the cockpit and the float struts, which are hard to add once the fuselage is closed. Check the fit of the fuselage halves against each other, and rather reinforce the joint from the inside with a strip of plastic. A light color underneath will show up every imperfection, so before painting go over the surface with a fine abrasive and degrease it. Add the antennas and the small protrusions only after the finish has been applied.
You get the parts on sprues, unpainted; glue and paints are not enclosed.
