About product

North American T-6 Texan in 1:144 scale from Valom

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American T-6 Texan advanced trainer in the small 1:144 scale, released in a box with camouflaged aircraft. Valom is a Czech maker focused on short-run molds and smaller scales, in which models suited even to collections with limited room come about. The parts are small but they keep the main shape features of the real subject, including the characteristic long glazing of the cockpit for a crew of two.

The real subject

The North American T-6 Texan was a single-engine two-seat advanced trainer with a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 radial engine and retractable landing gear. It came about in the second half of the 1930s and became one of the most widespread trainers in aviation history. In British and Commonwealth service it was known as the Harvard, and with the US Navy under the designation SNJ. Whole generations of pilots passed through it; besides basic advanced training it was used for gunnery practice, for observation and, in postwar conflicts, for directing air support as well. Camouflaged schemes were worn above all by aircraft of combat training and auxiliary units.

Building and painting tips

In 1:144 scale it is cleanliness of work that decides. Cut the gates off with a sharp scalpel and sand the surfaces with fine paper, so that the small parts do not lose their shape. Glue the landing gear and the propeller on only after painting, otherwise they break off easily. The cockpit glazing is most practically masked with narrow strips of masking tape. Lay the paint on with an airbrush in thin coats, so that the fine engraved detail is not lost; put the decals onto a gloss varnish and even the finished model out with a matte or semi-matte overcoat.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of small scales and modelers with limited room in a display case
  • Anyone interested in the history of flying training and in trainers
  • Modelers who want a quick project for a couple of evenings
  • Completing dioramas and line-ups in 1:144 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a release aimed at aircraft in camouflage colors, that is not at the classic silver or yellow training finish.

The number of kits in a box differs between releases in small scales and cannot be determined reliably from the name. The manufacturer states it on the packaging.

There are few parts, but they are small. A less experienced modeler can manage it, provided they work with a sharp knife and tweezers and glue with a very small amount of cement.

Thin cement for polystyrene applied with a fine brush. On the glazing use canopy glue, so that the clear parts do not go cloudy.
