A vacuum-formed clear canopy for a P-47D model in the version with a spine behind the cockpit, 1:144 scale from the Czech manufacturer Brengun. It is not an aircraft kit but a replacement clear part.
Responsibility details are not available.
A clear canopy vacuum-formed from thin clear film, intended as a replacement for the canopy on a model of the P-47D fighter in the older version with a raised spine behind the cockpit. It is not an aircraft kit; it is the clear part alone, which you swap over on the model.
A vacuum-formed canopy is considerably thinner than the injection-molded part from the box. The frames therefore look more delicate, the glazing does not distort and the interior really is visible through it, which in a small scale decides the overall impression. The trade-off for the thin wall is fragility, and the fact that the part first has to be cut out of the blister it is formed on.
Cut the canopy out of the blister with a margin, using a sharp new blade. Sand the remaining backing away on fine abrasive paper laid on a flat board, test fitting it on the model as you go. Work in small steps; material that has been sanded away cannot be put back. Transparency is improved by a brief dip in gloss varnish and by letting it dry slowly in a dust-free space. Glue it with clear canopy glue or with white PVA glue; cyanoacrylate will fog the film. Mask the frames with narrow tape and paint them only after the part is glued on. On the version with the spine, watch that the canopy follows the shape of the fuselage exactly.
