About product

Panavia Tornado 1:144 - an Academy plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Panavia Tornado combat aircraft in 1:144 scale from the Korean manufacturer Academy. The set contains parts on sprues, a clear canopy part, decals and instructions. The 1:144 scale is small - and here that is an advantage, not a compromise: the model builds quickly and takes up a fraction of the shelf space of a large kit. That is exactly why collectors who want a whole squadron together reach for it, as do modelers without room for display cases of models in 1:48. The particular version of the Tornado and the markings offered are given on the box and in the instructions.

The real subject

The Panavia Tornado is a combat aircraft from a joint European project of Germany, Great Britain and Italy. Its distinguishing feature is the variable-geometry wing: the wing opens out in flight for takeoff, landing and slow flight and sweeps back for a fast run at low altitude. It is twin-engine and two-seat (a pilot and a weapons systems officer). It was created in two main lines - the strike line (the IDS type, in the Royal Air Force as the GR) for all-weather attack at low altitude, and the interceptor line (the ADV type, the British F.2/F.3) with a lengthened fuselage and a long-range radar. The Tornado served in European air forces for decades.

Building and painting tips

In a small scale it is cleanliness that counts, not the number of details. Sand the remains of the gates carefully and glue with liquid cement for plastic by capillary action into the joint - excess squeezed out is harder to put right in 1:144 than on a large model. Fill and sand the seams on the fuselage and the air intakes, otherwise they will show under the paint. Use tweezers, small parts are easily lost. Spray a primer before painting; the camouflage can be done with a brush, but an airbrush gives cleaner transitions. Lay the decals onto smooth gloss varnish and fix them with matte varnish. Do not overdo the weathering - gently picking out the panel lines is enough.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors who are building a collection of aircraft in one small scale - a whole squadron fits into one display case.
  • For modelers who want a finished model quickly, without weeks of work on a single piece.
  • For fans of the Cold War and European air forces and of machines with a variable-geometry wing.
  • For those who have no room at home for large models but do not want to give up building.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

For this kind of model it is the main advantage. The finished model takes up a fraction of the shelf space and builds considerably faster than a large kit - which is why whole squadrons and type surveys are collected in 1:144. The detail is of course finer, so careful work on the seams and the paint pays off all the more.

The Tornado was created in two main lines - strike (IDS/GR) and interceptor (ADV, F.2/F.3), which differ among other things in the length of the fuselage and the equipment. The particular version and the markings offered in this package are given on the box and in the instructions.

Sprue cutters, a knife, a file or abrasive paper, liquid cement for plastic, filler, tweezers, primer and paints - ideally an airbrush for the camouflage. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

Yes, as a quick and undemanding project. A small scale means fewer parts, but the small components call for tweezers and a steady hand - and it is worth knowing that mistakes in the seams show more here than on large models.
