The second part of the decal series on British Tornados of 1991 - four machines of No. 20, No. 15 and No. 9 Squadrons with names and codes from the Tabuk base.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the winter of 1991 the British swing-wing bombers gathered on the Jordanian-Saudi border area, with the task of putting Iraqi airfields out of action. Tabuk became home to several squadrons at once, and the machines on its apron could be told apart only by their artwork and the two-letter code on the fin.
The subjects here are these aircraft:
All four come from Tabuk and all from 1991. The pair of No. 20 Squadron machines makes it possible to put two aircraft of the same unit side by side, which in this scale is a rewarding way to fill a display case on one theme.
The name Mig Eater refers to a kill the squadron prided itself on and is one of the few British nicknames from the conflict that reached the press of the day. The nickname Alarm Belle in turn plays on the anti-radar missile that machines of this type carried.
In the first days of the campaign British Tornados flew so low that the crews moved below the level of the surrounding buildings. Losses from these sorties led to a change of tactics and the machines moved to a safer altitude with guided munitions. Models built to these subjects therefore belong to the end of the operation, when the aircraft already carried pods for marking targets.
The procedure is the same as with the other sheets of this series: a gloss surface, a short soak, transfer with a damp brush and blotting of the excess. Fit the letter codes on the fin separately and watch that they sit on the vertical axis of the rudder.
