A resin set of Pratt and Whitney JT8D-209 engine nacelles for the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 in 1:144 scale from the manufacturer LACI. It is not a model of an aircraft, but a detail accessory with which the nacelles from a base kit are replaced.
Responsibility details are not available.
A resin detail accessory for building the MD-80 airliner in 1:144 scale. The set replaces the engine nacelle from a base kit with a casting with a more sharply drawn leading ring of the intake, with the dividing lines of the cowling and with the shape of the exhaust section. The set does not make up a model on its own; it is counted on as a replacement for a part on an aircraft already under construction.
The JT8D-200 is a reworked version of the older JT8D. The fundamental change was a markedly larger fan, thanks to which the bypass ratio rose roughly from a value around one to approximately double that. The engine thereby got a substantially thicker nacelle, consumption fell and above all so did noise, which was the main motive for operations at the end of the 1970s. The MD-80 carries both engines in nacelles on short pylons at the sides of the rear fuselage, so a nacelle does not point forward under the wing but is set into the side of the fuselage. That is precisely the most sensitive place on a model: the angle of a nacelle and its offset from the fuselage are noticed at first glance.
First wash the casting in warm water with dish soap, so residue of the mold release agent disappears, otherwise paint will not hold. Cut the pour blocks away with a saw or a cutting disc, not with nippers, which crush resin. Resin sands more softly and faster than polystyrene and clogs paper quickly, so work wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with super glue; ordinary polystyrene cement has no effect on it. Before gluing, do a dry fit of the joint with the pylon and fill any gap with super glue with a filler. The intake and the exhaust section are painted differently from the cowling, and inside the intake a metal shade usually comes into play.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a resin casting for more experienced modelers. Glue, paints and a base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
