About product

Mark I 1:144 Royal Navy lettering in black and white — a decal sheet

A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:144 scale that holds lettering for British naval aviation, in a black as well as a white version. Unlike sheets with roundels, these are not finished symbols but letters and characters from which you put the lettering together yourself. According to the name there are two sets on the sheet. It is not a kit but an accessory to a model that is already built.

Why set lettering character by character

The lettering and the codes on naval aircraft differed from machine to machine, so a universal sheet with finished lettering would cover only a fraction of the possibilities. A set of letters, by contrast, makes it possible to put together practically any marking: the advantage is that you choose the characters yourself, the drawback is that more precise and more patient work awaits you. The two color versions then solve a practical problem: light lettering on dark camouflage and dark lettering on the light underside of the airframe.

Application tips

Composed lettering stands and falls with a straight line and even spacing. The surest procedure is to stick thin strip tape onto the model as a guide line, to lay the individual characters along it and to remove the tape only once all the decals have dried. Work with plenty of water under the film so that a character can still be moved, and correct the position with the tip of a brush rather than with tweezers, as a point would tear the thin film. Cut the letters out one at a time and as closely as possible; at a scale this small the remains of carrier film between the characters are visible. The surface must be glossy, and once finished even it out with a matte varnish. Expect the individual characters in 1:144 scale to be at the limit of what can be handled, and keep a reserve ready.

Who the sheet is for

  • Builders of aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who want exact codes of their own instead of generic decals from a box
  • Those building several machines of one unit who need more characters
  • More experienced modelers willing to work with very small decals

This is a decal sheet, not a kit. The model, paints and varnish are not included in the package.

FAQ

According to the name it is lettering, that is a set of characters from which you put the inscription together yourself. The extent of the alphabet and the numerals is given on the box of the sheet.

Dark lettering is legible on a light surface and light lettering on a dark one. On one model both often come into use, as the sides of the fuselage need a different color from the lower surfaces.

Stick thin masking tape onto the model as a guide line, lay the characters along its edge and remove the tape only once they have dried. Mark the spacing out in advance so that the lettering does not drift.

In 1:144 scale the characters are very small and the work is slow. For a first attempt with decals we would recommend a sheet with finished symbols instead.
