A decal sheet in 1:144 scale with four camouflage schemes for Spitfires of versions VIII and IXc, from a test machine in England to Pacific aircraft of an Australian squadron.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set of waterslide decals offers markings for four particular Supermarine Spitfire aircraft in two later versions. One of them is a machine of the IXc subversion with the fuselage code MK210, which according to the supplier flew with the American test section at Boscombe Down and carried a personal inscription. The remaining three belong to the Mk VIII variant and fall into the Pacific and Indian theaters.
The Mk IX came about as a quick answer to the new generation of German fighters: a two-stage Merlin engine was fitted into the cell of the older airframe and the machine at once held its own again in combat at altitude. The Mk VIII, by contrast, was a considered solution, with a strengthened structure and equipment for long flights, and so it headed for distant theaters. Australian squadrons used it to defend the northern coast, and over Burma and India it served even after the war ended, as one of the machines on the sheet, dated to 1946, shows.
The decals are printed on a common backing and are separated with a sharp knife close to the edge of the artwork. The usual procedure applies: a short bath in lukewarm water, sliding the artwork onto a gloss surface and pressing it down with an absorbent cloth. In 1:144 scale the lettering is very tiny, so smooth-jawed tweezers and good lighting pay off. Decal softener helps to settle the artwork over riveting and panel lines.
The aircraft is not supplied; the sheet is intended for a model that you already have built and sprayed.
