A reduction of the American .30 caliber ammunition carrying box, designated M1, made in 1:16 scale. It is a separate modeling accessory that is added to a finished model of a vehicle or to a diorama. The 1:16 scale is one of the large scales in which sizable models of tanks and vehicles are built, and it is precisely on those that empty hulls and load beds look unnatural. Small equipment such as ammunition boxes is therefore one of the quickest ways to give a model a lived-in and used look.
The M1 box is one of the most widespread pieces of American field equipment. A sheet metal container with a hinged lid, a seal and a folding bail handle, it served to carry .30 caliber ammunition belts and from the Second World War onward it could be met with practically every American unit. It was carried on jeeps, armored personnel carriers and trucks and became such a matter-of-course object that it can be used convincingly in many different periods and theaters.
Wash the accessory in lukewarm water with detergent before painting and let it dry so that the paint holds well. Apply a primer, then the main shade of olive green and finally the lettering. A graded patina makes the best impression, that is a dark wash in the pressings and corners, fine abrasions on the edges and light dust on the lower part. Boxes look best in a group, quite happily turned different ways, one open and one lying on its side.
