Hartge rims, seventeen inches, 1:24 scale

An accessory set of wheels for car models in 1:24 scale. The rims correspond to the Hartge form seventeen inches in diameter on the subject, that is to a size which appeared on German cars of the eighties and nineties as equipment added after a modification.

The real subject

Hartge is a German tuning house focused on BMW cars, and its rims are among the things by which a modified car is recognized. The wheels meanwhile tend to be the weakest place in kits: they often have soft shapes and thick spokes and look like a molding rather than a piece of cast alloy. Swapping them for an accessory set therefore changes the look of a model more than an hour spent anywhere else.

Building and painting tips

• Try the seating on the axle dry; the hole for the pin may need widening with a drill.
• Cut the excess material and the marks left by production away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the remainder carefully.
• Wash and degrease the parts before painting; paint does not hold on an unwashed surface.
• Apply the metallic shade in thin layers, as a coarse layer clogs the fine drawing of the spokes.
• Glue with cyanoacrylate glue; it holds regardless of what the parts are made of.
